Bet — Weekday Letter, Sunday (Sitting Letter)

Attributes

The letter Bet is practiced on Sunday, the day of Chesed-Love.

Bet is connected with Chesed-love, beginning, and with the opposite qualities of wisdom and folly. It is the first letter of the Torah. Bet literally means “house”, indicating that this world was created to be the House of God. The awareness of living in this world as the House of God brings one to behave with love and kindness toward all creatures. It is pronounced either like the B in “bet” or the V in “vet”.

In the Sefer Yetzira Bet is connected with the first day of the week, the direction “south” and the right eye in the human body. Bet is the first generation from the Water element. Its planet is the moon.

In relation to the Ten Sefirot, Bet corresponds to Chesed-Love. In the human body it corresponds to the right arm.

How to do the letter

To do the Bet, sit on the floor with your legs stretched straight in front of you and toes pointing up. Then, keeping the back straight, coming from the pelvis, gently bend forward with your arms reaching for the toes. Keep the arms held parallel to the legs. Bend your hands upward, fingers pointing up, gently at the wrists. The ideal position is to have the palms even with the soles of your feet. However, it is more important to be physically comfortable and relaxed so that you can work on sensing the expansive love and wisdom which are related to the letter Bet. Once you have stretched as far as you can toward your feet, do the inner exercise 3-5 times or more. When you have become familiar with doing the Bet, you can include an additional mental focus on the right eye while doing the basic inner exercise.
