Dalet — Weekday Letter, Tuesday (Standing Letter)

Attributes

The letter Dalet is practiced on Tuesday, the day of Tiferet-Perfection.

Dalet is connected with the attribute of Tiferet-Perfection, and with the opposite qualities of fertility and desolation. The Dalet in the Kabalah is representative of Malchut-Kingdom, the feminine attribute. It is, however, in the order of days, put in the place of Tiferet-Perfection, the male attribute, which is Tuesday. That is because Kingliness and Perfection, the Woman and the Man, are always found together. The word Dalet in Hebrew means “Gate”, the entrance to the world of transcendence, the glass window through which all the higher realms can be perceived. It is the middle ground, so to say, between Creator and creation. As a posture Dalet is closest to the traditional position for silent prayer in Judaism, the Amidah. It is connected with speech (dibur) and the quality of a stabilized mind (da’at).

In the Sefer Yetzira Dalet is connected with the third day of the week, the direction “east” and the right nostril in the human body. Dalet is the first generation from the element of Air. Its heavenly body is the Sun.

In relation to the Ten Sefirot, Dalet corresponds to Tiferet-Perfection. In the human body it corresponds to the torso.

How to do the letter

To do the Dalet, stand upright with legs and feet joined together and arms down along the sides. Then raise your arms in line with your sides, keeping them straight, until they stand at a 90° angle to your torso. Have your palms facing ahead of you and extend your arms as if you are pushing against a wall. Then bend the fingers back toward your face and hold them there. Find the level of tension in the hands and forearms that you can maintain for 3-5 breaths, hold it, and go into the inner exercise. When you have become familiar with doing the Dalet, you can include an additional mental focus on the right nostril while doing the basic inner exercise.
