Gimel — Weekday Letter, Monday (Standing Letter)

Attributes

The letter Gimel is practiced on Monday, the day of Gevurah-Courage.

Gimel is connected with the attribute of Gevurah-Courage, and with the opposite qualities of prosperity and poverty. The Hebrew word Gimel means “gracious giving”, so that one should focus one’s strength and power on giving rather than using it for taking. Gimel has the G sound as in the word “give”.

In the Sefer Yetzira Gimel is connected with the second day of the week, the direction “north” and the right ear in the human body. It is the first generation from the Fire element. Its planet is Mars.

In relation to the Ten Sefirot, Gimel corresponds to Gevurah-Courage. In the human body it corresponds to the left arm.

There are two variations of Gimel: left and right.

How to do the letter

Standing on left leg

To do the Gimel, one should stand straight, with feet together, arms down along each side, looking straight ahead. Then one bends the hands upwards at the wrists, palms facing down, while the arms are still along the body. Then bend and lift the right knee and place the right foot about one foot forward and to the right, with the right heel raised as much as possible, lightly touching the ball of the foot on the floor. The left leg and foot remains in a straight position. Keep your weight as much as possible on the left leg. Be careful not to lean forward, but to remain erect from head to foot. You can have a sense of being in the suspended motion of walking. When you feel yourself stable do the inner exercise 3-5 times.

Right orientation

Start as before standing with feet together, arms down along the body on each side, looking straight ahead. Then one bends the hands upwards at the wrists, palms facing down, while the arms are still along the body. Then bend and lift the left knee and place the left foot about one foot forward and to the left, with the left heel raised as much as possible, lightly touching the ball of the foot on the floor. The right leg and foot remains in a straight position. Keep your weight as much as possible on the right leg. When you feel yourself stable do the inner exercise 3-5 times.

When you have become familiar with doing the Gimel, you can include an additional mental focus on the right ear while doing the basic inner exercise.
