Zayin — Monthly Letter, Sivan (Standing Letter)

Attributes

The letter Zayin means “weapon” in Hebrew. The mystics explain that man’s true weapon is prayer. Therefore, since Zayin is numerically the number 7, it is related to the seventh lower attribute, Malchut, which is prayer.

Zayin is connected to the third month of spring, Sivan, and its zodiac sign is Gemini. It is the first level of Air.

Sivan, the Hebrew month of this letter, is the month in which the Torah was given at Mount Sinai when eternal Life energy entered the world through the Hebrew letters.

How to do the letter

To do the Zayin stand with your feet joined together and your arms alongside the body. Bend your hands up at a 90 degree angle to the arms, palms parallel to the floor, and fingers extended. Then raise and bring the arms, with the palms still parallel to the floor, behind the back, until the fingers point at the kidneys (roughly at the level of the lowest rib) without touching the back. The aim is to have the hands parallel, fingers extended toward the back, but not touching the back, with the elbows turned in toward the center line of the spine. When you have found a personally suitable form of the pose, go into the inner exercise for 3-5 breaths or more.

  3. You can try having a partner gently hold your arms to a closer approximation of the ideal form of the letter as you do the inner exercise.
  4. Since the letter is practiced daily for an entire month, there will be significant gains in flexibility for those who persevere.
